Durable, comfortable and versatile, the humble T-shirt is so much more than a wardrobe basic. It’s been used as a symbol of rebellion, solidarity and sheer simplicity. Here are some of the most iconic moments for the humble tee in fashion’s history.
Marlon Brando, 1950s
Star of the silver screen, Marlon Brando, famously wore a white T-shirt as Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire. The film won four Academy Awards and took T-shirts from conventional to cool.
Jean Seberg, 1960s
Jean-Luc Goddard’s film, Breathless broke the mould of French cinema. It was filmed on a budget in Paris using handheld cameras and an improvised script for creative storytelling about a lovable rogue and his American fling. The sight of Jean Seberg strolling down the Champs-Elysées in The New York Herald Tribune T-shirt elevated it to a style staple.
John Travolta, 1970s
We all know the look. Quiffed hair, black jeans, a T-Bird-emblazoned leather jacket and a crisp, slim-fitting white T-shirt. John Travolta as Danny Zuko will forever be one of the T-shirt’s best on-screen moments.
Diana Ross, 1980s
Diana Ross is the original diva. She’s known for glitter and high glamour so you wouldn’t expect to see her in a simple white T-shirt. But that’s exactly what she wore on the cover of her 1980 album, Diana. The pared-down look must’ve paid off because the album went on to sell over 10 million copies around the world.
Kate Moss, 1990s
From couture at Paris Fashion Week to the shortest shorts at Glastonbury, Kate Moss can pull off anything. Some of her best fashion moments are when she’s off duty, dressed in jeans and a plain-white tee. An iconic wardrobe staple for one iconic gal.
